Set up the Apple Messages plugin on a supported Mac and use it to search, summarize and draft safely.

Apple Messages with ChatGPT Work and Codex
The video describes the Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI’s release notes confirm support on Apple silicon Macs in the desktop app for searching iMessage, SMS and RCS and preparing or sending messages. The plugin is not a generic web or mobile feature.
One useful step at a time.
- 01Check eligibility
- 02Install plugin
- 03Try a read-only task
- 04Review any send
Check and connect
Use an Apple silicon Mac with the current ChatGPT desktop app. Open Work or Codex and find Plugins. Search for Apple Messages, inspect its scope and install it if available to your plan and workspace. Complete any macOS permissions or app connection steps shown.
Start with a narrow read-only request: ask for a conversation you remember and compare the result in Messages. If the plugin is absent, check desktop app updates and workspace permissions instead of assuming all ChatGPT surfaces include it.
Four useful requests
- Find a recommendation. Search my Messages for restaurant recommendations from June 2026. Return the sender, date and exact restaurant names. Do not send anything.
- Meeting catch-up. Summarize my recent conversation with [person] about [topic]. Separate decisions, open questions and promises I made.
- Group chat decisions. Read [group chat] from [date]. List decisions, unresolved items and tasks assigned to me, with message dates.
- Draft a reply. Draft a short reply to [person] confirming [fact]. Show the text and recipient before any send action.
Keep each request limited to the people and time period you need. Check names, context and dates before relying on the summary.
Send only after review
A draft is a draft. If you ask the plugin to send, verify the recipients, text and attachments in the approval step. OpenAI says approval is requested by default before sending. For sensitive matters, open the original conversation yourself and send from Messages after review.
Disconnect the plugin when you no longer need it or if you connected the wrong account. Plugin permissions and availability can change with your workspace settings.
